CALIN, the Celtic Advanced Life Science Innovation Network, is a Wales-Ireland INTERREG project which supports research and development programmes for small and medium sized businesses in the life science sector. It is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The businesses are connected to the Welsh and Irish academic knowledge base.

Specifically, The Young Darwinian and its parent company, The Welston Press, is linked to researchers in the Department of Biosciences at Cardiff University and School of Natural Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIGalway).

The aim of the research is to develop educational resources about microplastics. Kits for detection and identification of microplastics, which are safe and suitable for use in schools and FE colleges, will be developed.
